AGNUS-CASTUS
aka Chasteberry, Vitex
(Vitex Agnus-castus)

CAUTION: If taking hormones (i.e. birth control pills) do NOT take Agnus-castus. An excess produces the sensation of crawling skin (a nerve disorder).
A UTERINE STIMULANT which should not be taken during pregnancy.

NEEDS: Indigenous to Mediterranean area. Good in warm climates and with protection in the north.
HARVEST: Ripe berries.

CONTAINS: Volatile oil, alkaloids, a bitter principle (castene), glycosides (aucbin, agnoside), flavonoids (casticin, isovitexin, orientin).

USES

MEDICINAL:
Used as a tonic for the reproductive organs; herb most recomended for balancing female hormones, although it affects both male and female hormone function.
Stimulates and normalizes pituitary function, especially as relates to progesterone; helps to restore a normal estrogen-to-progesterone balance.
May be helpful in cases of fibroid cysts.
Used for PMS, spotty periods, insufficient lactation, hot flashes of menopause.
Particular for certain female problems involving that part of the ovary involved with egg production and release.
Balances female sexual energy by lowering oversex drive and increasing drive in low sexual vitality. It is usually used for a period of 3 months, unless symptoms listed under 'caution' (above) appear, and then should be discontinued.

DOSE: TRADITIONAL DOSAGES FOR PROFESSIONAL NOTE ONLY
All others buy commercial preparations and follow directions carefully.
Taken as a tea with 3 C. boiling water poured over 1 Tbsp Vitex berries, 1 Tbsp wild oats (high in testosterone), 1 Tbsp anise seeds; steeped 15 minutes, then taken between meals throughout the day.
